Fall is a great time to do your yearly family session but I love the idea of changing it up and doing a pumpkin farm Halloween inspired session instead of a holiday session. For the Godwin Banning Family Halloween is the most beloved holiday so it made perfect sense for them. We opted for a more playful and epic pumpkin farm and headed to The Great Pumpkin Farm in Clarence outside of Buffalo, New York.
Kitsch Pumpkin Farm Fun in Clarence, New York
Other pumpkin farms could provide a more rustic, subdued, fall vibe. The Great Pumpkin Farm instead has a kitsch feel and is playful and whimsical. It definitely offers many fun spots to take photos! We utilized many of their displays and decor. There are many large set ups of pumpkins, tons of big signs and cutouts, and lots of spooky and creepy Halloween displays. Doing photos in a few different spots at a location allows for more variety in your photos and this is great for using them in different ways. Use a photo from each spot to create an eye catching holiday card.
Halloween Session in lieu of a Holiday Session
Fall is the favorite time to do a family session but it doesn’t have to be a holiday session. Go for a Halloween inspired session if that’s more your style. Work with the color palette of the holiday and season. The Godwin Banning Family went with all black and then a pumpkin outfit for their baby. Texture is important to consider when planning session outfits. Here a velvet top, a loose knit sweater, and shiny leggings worked great to add variety to all black.
Photos of just the Littles
Of course we had to do some solo photos of their newest family member too! We did photos of just baby in front of the “How Tall This Fall” sign for fun and some of him in his pumpkin outfit in front of all the pumpkins. We do multiple groupings during a family session to get the most out of the session: the whole family, just the littles, etc.
A Family Session Every Year
It can seem like just one more thing to do but a family session every year is really a great tradition to get into. Book it early in the season and remind yourself it can be fun. It can be an outing for the whole family and something to look forward to. At least if you keep that mindset, it helps it all go smoother. It’s a great way to celebrate your family each year. It’ll be great years from now to look back at how your family grew over time. Especially when the kids are little, you’ll be documenting them too.
